Physical Description and Item Details


(Maria Anna Orden Kreuz II. Klasse). Issued 1907-1918. A silver gilt cross with blue enameled arms; the obverse with a central silver gilt medallion depicting the leftward facing bust of Maria Anna, surrounded by a ring of white enamels decorated with silver gilt arabesques; the reverse with a similar central silver gilt medallion, inscribed “MA” for “Maria Anna”, also surrounded by a ring of white enamels, decorated with matching silver gilt arabesques; on a loop for suspension from its period original ladies ribbon; measuring 37.67 mm (w) x 37.88 mm (h); weighing 21.6 grams; light and shallow flaking of the enamels on the top of the reverse six o’clock arm; in overall better than very fine condition.

History


This Order was instituted by King Friedrich August III to commemorate his deceased mother Maria Anna. The Order was awarded to women that had rendered distinguished to the court, and within public service and non-profit organizations.

The II Class Cross was only awarded 49 times.
