The Anna-Luise Merit Medal was instituted on February 19, 1918, by Prince Günther of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt on the birthday of his wife, Princess Anna-Luise. The Medal was conferred upon women in Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who rendered exceptional patriotic service during the First World War. Women were awarded for such services as caring for wounded soldiers and veterans.

The Silver Medal was awarded 117 times to female citizens of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
