A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Duke Karl Günther, with the circular inscription ‘KARL GÜNTHER FÜRST Z. SCHWARZB. SONDERSHAUSEN’. The reverse features the inscription ‘FÜR LANDWIRTHSCHAFTLICHES VERDIENST’ (‘for merit in trade’), surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. On a loop for suspension, on a dark blue ribbon.
On December 7, 1889, Prince Karl Günther created three merit awards for accomplishments in a variety of different fields. The awards included a Service Medal for Art and Science, a Service Medal for Commercial and Industrial Merit, and a Service Medal for Agriculture. The awards were conferred upon citizens who were exceptionally accomplished in one of the aforementioned fields.
The Silver Medal was awarded to six recipients.
