The Fire Service Medal was instituted on January 20, 1913, by Prince Friedrich of Waldeck-Pyrmont. The Medal was conferred upon individuals who rendered at least 25 years of voluntary fire service. In addition, it was also awarded to individuals who made a special contribution toward the firefighting efforts in a specific community or in Waldeck as a whole.
