1916-1918 issue. (Charlottenkreuz) A silver cross with clover finals; the obverse inscribed with the royal cipher for Wilhelm/Charlotte; the reverse dated “1916”; on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon; measuring 40.38 mm (w) x 44.93 mm (h); weighing 13.3 grams; in near mint condition.
The Charlotte Cross was founded on January 5, 1916, by King Wilhelm II to honour his wife, Queen Charlotte. The Cross was conferred upon recipients, without consideration of rank, who provided exceptional care to the sick and wounded during wartime. It was also awarded to recognize other care-related services rendered during the First World War.
The crosses composed of pure silver were awarded at the beginning of the war, while the crossed composed of silvered materials were awarded at the end of the First World War.
