History

The Charlotte Cross was founded on January 5, 1916 by King Wilhelm II to honour his wife, Queen Charlotte. The cross was conferred upon recipients, without consideration of rank, who provided exceptional care to the sick and wounded during wartime. It was also awarded to recognise other care-related services rendered during the First World War.

The crosses composed of pure silver were awarded at the beginning of the First World War, while the crossed composed of silvered materials were awarded towards the end of the war.
