History


The Civil Merit Medal was instituted on November 6, 1806 by King Friedrich I of Württemberg. The medal was awarded to recognise exceptional civil merit and service.

The Type II medals were instituted by King Wilhelm I on September 23, 1818 and feature his portrait on the obverse.

The Type II medals have two possible reverse inscriptions.

The first version was awarded between 1818 and 1825, and features the monogram "W" surrounded by the motto "FURCHTLOS UND TREW".

The second version was awarded between 1825 and 1840, and features the inscription "DEM VERDIENSTE".
