History

The Civil Merit Medal was instituted on November 6, 1806 by King Friedrich I of Württemberg. The medal was awarded to recognise exceptional civil merit and service.

The Type IV medals were instituted by King Karl and feature his portrait on the obverse.

The Type IV medals with the obverse stamp "C.SCHNITZPAHN F." were minted in the first issue of the medal, and the medals without an obverse stamp were minted in the second issue of the medal.
