Württemberg, Kingdom. A Merit Medal, Gold Grade
(Verdienstmedaille in Gold). Constructed of gilded silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a rightward-facing profile of Wilhelm II circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with an inscription of “DEM VERDIENST” (“FOR MERIT”) inside of a laurel wreath, unmarked, measuring 28.26 mm in diameter, weighing 13.3 grams (inclusive of ribbon), minor tarnishing evident, in better than very fine condition.
The Civil Merit Medal was instituted on November 6, 1806, by King Friedrich I of Württemberg. The Medal was awarded to recognise exceptional civil merit and service.
The Type V medals were instituted on June 26, 1892, by King Wilhelm II and feature his portrait on the obverse.
The Type IV medals with the obverse stamp "C.SCHNITZPAHN F." were minted in the first issue of the medal, and the medals without an obverse stamp were minted in the second issue of the medal.
