History

This Order was originally established by Duke Carl Eugen of Wurttemberg and it was called the "Carl Military Order". It was conferred upon Officers' to recognize meritorious service rendered during the 7 Years War.

The Order was also awarded for a minimum of 25 years of continuous and faithful service.

The Order underwent multiple expansions, redesigns, and name changes until it became obsolete in 1918.

The Type II awards were instituted on November 6, 1799 by Frederick I, who expanded the Order to include the grades of Grand Cross with Grand Cross Breast Star, Commander, and Knight, and renamed the Order the "Ducal Military Order" from 1799-1803.

In 1806 Wurttemberg became a Kingdom and King Frederick I changed the name of the Order to the "Order of Military Merit" and amended the regulations to ensure that the recipients wore their awards at all times.
