History

The Commemorative Medal of the Spanish "Blue Division" was established on January 3rd, 1944, and was conferred upon men of the 250th Infantry Division (also known as the Blue Division) who served on the Eastern Front during the Second World War.

The regiment was composed of around 47,000 men and they were sent by the Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco to aid Nazi Germany. Franco sent the regiment to repay Adolf Hitler for sending the Condor Legion, a unit of Nazi Germany soldiers, to aid Franco’s Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War.

The medals were manufactured by Deschler & Sohn, Munich, and they feature the maker’s mark “1.”
