History

The Dr. Fritz Todt Prize was instituted by the German Labour Front leader, Dr. Robert Ley, to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Fritz Todt and honour his memory following his untimely death. The award was conferred upon Germans who made valuable contributions to the war effort and in particular, to individuals who improved the production of weapons or munitions, or helped develop methods to save resources, reduce energy consumption, or increase labour.

The award was conferred with a certificate and a money prize. Recipients of the I Class were awarded 50,000 Reichsmark, recipients of the II Class received 30,000 Reichsmarks, and recipients of the III Class received 10,000 Reichsmarks.

There are three versions of each grade. The first version has an inscription on the obverse reading, "DR FRITZ TODT PREIS,” and the reverse features the date of Dr. Fritz Todt's death and an award number. The second version has an inscription on the obverse reading, "DR FRITZ TODT PREIS," but it does not have the date or an award number on the reverse. The third version has an inscription on the obverse reading, “DR FRITZ TODT," but it does not have the date or an award number on the reverse.

The decoration was annually awarded on September 4th, Todt’s birthday, and on February 8th, the anniversary of Todt’s death.
