A fine quality parade mounted German 40-Year Faithful Service Cross; first class; in gilded tombac and black enamels; constructed in the shape of a cross pattée; the obverse with an oak leaf wreath between the arms of the cross, with a static black enameled swastika in the centre; the reverse inscribed “Für treue Dienste” within a square; on a loop for suspension from a parade mounted cornflower blue ribbon bar; measuring 40.41 mm x 40.76 mm; weighing 19.8 grams; the ribbon slightly soiled from wear, but overall extremely fine condition.
The Faithful Service Decoration was instituted by Adolf Hitler on January 30th, 1938, to reward public service employees for long and faithful service. The Decoration was conferred upon individuals who worked for the railway, post office, or in the civil service.
The I Class was conferred upon individuals who rendered 40 years of service. If a I Class recipient went on to render 50 years of service, they were awarded a golden oak leaf with the number “50” on the obverse. The oak leaf was attached to the I Class ribbon.
