History

The Lappland Shield was founded by the German Officer Boehme and was awarded to members of the 20th Mountain Army Unit who had served in the Lapland for at least six months. The men in this unit fought a two-front campaign against advancing Soviet and Finnish forces from November 1944 to the war's end.

The date of institution is unknown, although it was likely around March 1945. The badges continued to be produced and awarded in POW camps even after the end of the Second World War.
