Constructed of silvered bronze, the obverse consisting of a circular laurel and oak leaf wreath, wrapped with a ribbon bearing an inscription of “GRENZSCHUTZ OST” (“BORDER PROTECTION EAST”) and a date of “1919”, around a central Roman numeral “5” on a hollow background, the reverse with a vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, unmarked, measuring 35.20 mm in diameter, weighing 6.0 grams, in very fine condition.
After the end of the First World War, the 5th Army Corps performed border guard duties in Lower Silesia at the borders to Poland and Czechoslovakia.
On March 15, 1919, the commanding General of the 5th Army Corps, General of the Infantry Wichura, instituted the Badge of the V Army Corps. It was awarded to unit members who showed exceptional merit and bravery in front line fighting. The badge was awarded between April and July 1919.
The badge is in the shape of a hollow-stamped silvered wreath of laurel on the left and oak leaves on the right side, with a letter "V" in the centre. Around the wreath are four ribbons, each with a blackened inscription, together reading "GRENZ SCHUTZ OST 1919" (border protection east).
