The Freikorps von Neufville was established by Rittmeister G. von Neufville in early December of 1918. The name changed several times, which is why it is also known as Schwarze Garde (Black Guard), Landesschützen-Abteilung Garde (Homeland Defense Detachment Guard), and 1. Garde-Landesschützen-Abteilung (1st Guard Homeland Defense Detachment). It was disbanded on October 22, 1920.
The badge was likely already planned in 1919, but only instituted in March of 1920. There are two grades, I Class and II Class. The I Class was awarded to members who had served for a year, while the II Class was awarded to those that had served for six months.
The II Class cross is made of black lacquered iron. The 6 o'clock arm is elongated. The round centre piece features a guard star. The cross arms feature the inscription "TREU UND FEST" (loyal and firm) with one word per arm, read clockwise starting with the 9 o'clock arm. The 6 o'clock arm features the inscription "I/XII/1918". Crosses without a 6 o'clock arm inscription have been observed.
The II Class cross was worn on a black ribbon with two white stripes.
