The Commemorative Honour Cross of the Navy Corps, Flanders was instituted by the post-WWI veterans' association in Flanders, and it was conferred upon members of the German military who had rendered service in the battles in Flanders.
The medal's ribbon may feature clasps denoting service in front line battles, including “ANTWERPEN”, “DURCHBRUCHSSCHLACHT”, “DURCHBRUCHSSCHLACHT 1918”,“FLANDERNSCHLACHT”, “FLANDERNSCHLACHT 1917”,“LUFTKRIEG”, “SEEKRIEG”, “SOMME”, “YPERN”, and “YSER”.
There are examples of some awards which feature non-official crossed swords on the ribbon.
The cross was unofficial and soldiers were required to purchase their own award.
There were approximately 30,000 crosses issued in total.
