History

The Medal for Valour in the World War was conferred upon members of the Union of German Naval Veterans' Association who had fought in the First World War.

Since it was an unofficial award conferred during the Weimar Republic, the veterans were required to purchase the medal themselves.

The medal’s ribbon may feature a clasp reading “SKAGERRAK”, which could be purchased by recipients of the medal who had served in the Battle of Jutland.

The obverse inscription translates to "Remain loyal". The reverse inscription translates to "Union of German Naval Veterans Association" and "For valour in the World War".

This medal is also known as the Commemorative Medal of the Union of German Naval Veterans' Association.

It was designed by Karl Ludwig Manzel, and his name is stamped on the obverse: "L.MANZEL".
