History

This Order was a resuscitated version of the Austro-Hungarian Order of St. Stephen. The Hungarian version of the Order was revived in 1938 by the Horthy Regime and re-titled the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary.

The Grand Master of the Hungarian Order was Miklós Horthy.

The design of the Hungarian Order grades was not altered from the design of the Imperial Austrian Order of St. Stephen, Type II (1860-1918) awards.

There were three recipients of the Hungarian Order from 1938-1945, including the Commander grade to Pál Teleki.

The Order was abolished for the second time in 1945, and then it was once again revived in 2011 by Prime Minister Victor Orban.

See Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, AUT102, in the Orders of Austria (Austria (Imperial)), the Order of St. Stephen of Hungary, HUN101, in the Order of the Hungarian Regency (1918-1944), and the Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, HUN235, in the Orders of Hungary (1989-) for more information.
