History

The Medal was established by Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein on August 16, 1956 to commemorate his 50th birthday. It was awarded to both citizens of the Principality, as well as foreigners, mostly for long service. Prince Franz Josef II bore the entire cost of the medal himself.

Prince Franz Josef II was born on August 16, 1906 and ascended to the throne on July 25, 1938, succeeding his grand uncle. He was a very popular sovereign, his time in power is most notably remembered for women gaining the vote in 1984, and great economic development which ultimately raised Liechtenstein to be one of the richest per capita nations. He passed his powers to his eldest son Hans-Adam in 1984 and later died on November 13, 1989.
