History

The Order of the Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein was founded on July 22, 1937 by Prince Franz I of Liechtenstein, to commemorate his eight year wedding anniversary with his wife, Elisabeth von Gutmann, an Austrian noblewoman. The Order originally consisted of five classes, Grand Star, Grand Cross, Commanders Cross with Star, Commander’s Cross, Knights Cross and two medals of merit, in Gold and silver. In 1960, it was amended to include the Grand Cross with Diamonds following the Grand Star.

The order is bestowed by the reigning prince however, the government can nominate deserving individuals. It is conferred on both nationals and foreigners for outstanding public services to the principality. The decorations remain the property whom they were bestowed to, and can be passed down to their heirs. The Order does not grant special privileges to the receiver.

The Knights Cross is worn on a triangularly folded ribbon, 11mm in diameter. Women wear the Knights Cross on a stitched ribbon of the correct colour.
