History

The Medal of Merit for Civil Defence was established by Grand Duke Jean by Grand Ducal Decree on December 4, 1987. It is awarded to Civil Defence volunteers in recognition of long and faithful service.

The I Class Medal may also be awarded to leaders and instructors of relief centres for 15 years of meritorious service. The obverse inscription translates to "Altruism, Solidarity, Devotion," and the reverse inscription translates to "Civil Defence Merit." It is the only grade that features a surmounting royal crown.
