The National Order of the Medal of Merit for Sport was created by Grand Ducal Decree on March 26, 1976. It had been previously awarded as a medal. It is conferred upon Luxembourgish citizens for distinguished service to physical education and sports in Luxembourg and may also be awarded posthumously.

The Silver Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Luxembourg, Medal of Sport Merit." It must be returned if the member is promoted to the Gilt Medal.
