History

The Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to members of the Maltese Armed Forces, the Maltese Police Force, the Maltese Correctional Service, and the Assistance and Rescue Force within the Civil Protection Department for at least two years of meritorious service on the recommendation of the recipient's commanding officer. It may also be awarded to foreign military or police personnel, but only under exceptional circumstances.

The Silver Medal is awarded on different ribbons to denote the type of service rendered by the recipient.
