The Bravery Medal is awarded to Maltese citizens in recognition of extraordinary acts of gallantry. It may be awarded posthumously, and it may also be awarded to foreigners on an honorary basis. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "MRQ."

The Silver Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "The Republic of Malta," and a reverse inscription that translates to "For Bravery." It is worn with a suspension clasp inscribed "1975." It is worn on a bow when awarded to women.
