History

The Medal for Service to the Republic is also known as the Midalja ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika, and is awarded to Maltese citizens and organisations in recognition of distinguished service to the nation. It may be awarded posthumously, and it may also be awarded to foreigners on an honorary basis. All recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "MQR."

The annual contingent is limited to 10 recipients.

The Medal features a reverse inscription that translates to "For Services to the Republic."
