Prince Rainier III ascended to the throne on May 9, 1949, and ruled Monaco for 56 years. He is well known for marrying American Actress Grace Kelly in 1956, and for expanding Monaco's economy beyond the Casino Gambling industry. Prince Rainier III died April 6, 2005 and was succeeded by his son, Albert II.
