History

The Volunteer Medal for Public Order and Safety was established by Royal Decree in 1958 as the Volunteer Medal. Its current name was established in 1998.

It is awarded to Dutch citizens who have volunteered for at least 10 years in a public service or safety organisation. Service in the following organisations is recognised: the police, the fire department, the National Reserve Corps, the Urban Search and Rescue service, the Netherlands Antilles Volunteer Corps, the Dutch Red Cross, or any other ambulance service or first aid organisation. A clasp may be awarded for every five years of additional service.

The Bronze Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to “Serving the Freedom of the Country.”
