History

The Red Cross Cross of Merit was established by Royal Decree in 1914. It is awarded to individuals in recognition of meritorious services rendered to or through the Dutch Red Cross.

There are two versions of the Cross that differ in the spelling of the reverse inscription, although both translate to "Dutch Red Cross." Both versions also feature an obverse inscription that translates to "For Merit."

During the Second World War, the crosses were manufactured in England by Spink & Son Ltd.

There may be additional versions that vary in size.
