The Atlantic Star was instituted by King George VI in May of 1945. The Bronze Star was awarded to members of Royal, Merchant, and Commonwealth navies to reward 6 months of service in the Atlantic or in home waters. The Star was also awarded to convoys to North Russia and South Atlantic and personnel of the army and royal air force who served abroad for 2 months. The Atlantic Star was only awarded to recipients of the 1939-1945 Star. Service cut short by injury or death, as well as actions which were recognized by another award for gallantry or a mention in despatches qualified for the Star.
The clasps "FRANCE AND GERMANY" and "AIR CREW EUROPE", which denoted other Second World War campaign Stars the recipient qualified for, were authorized for wear with the Atlantic Star, however, only the first clasp issued to the recipient could be worn on the ribbon. Recipients of a clasp were entitled to wear a silver gilt rosette when the ribbon was worn alone.
