The Defence Medal was instituted by King George VI in May 1945 and was awarded to British and Commonwealth forces along with some civilian units for non-operation service between September 3, 1939, and September 2, 1945. The Silver Medal was awarded to personnel in recognition of 3 years of service at home, 1 year of service in non-operational areas, or for 6 months of overseas service in territories subjected to or threatened with an air attack. Service cut short by death or disability inflicted whilst on duty also qualified for the award.
Recipients of the Silver Medal who have received the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct are entitled to wear the emblem on the ribbon.
There are 2 versions of the Medal which differ by composition. British issued Medals are composed of cupro-nickel, while Canadian issued Medals are composed of silver.
