History

The General Service Medal 1962-2007 was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II by Royal Warrant on August 15, 1964, to replace to Naval General Service Medal 1915-1962 and the General Service Medal 1918-1962. The Silver Medal is awarded to British Forces in recognition of minor campaigns and operations between 1962 and 2007.

14 clasps, denoting the campaign, are authorized for award with the Silver Medal:

1. "CYRPUS 1963-64"
2. "BORNEO"
3. "RADFAN"
4. "SOUTH ARABIA"
5. "MALAY PENINSULA"
6. "SOUTH VIETNAM"
7. "NORTHERN IRELAND"
8. "DHOFAR"
9. "LEBANON"
10. "MINE CLEARANCE, GULF OF SUEZ"
11. "GULF"
12. "KUWAIT"
13. "N. IRAQ & S. TURKEY"

The Royal Warrant allows for the institution of additional clasps. A bronze oak leaf may also be awarded to recipients of the Medal who have received a mention in despatches.

A variety of different naming styles were used.
