The British North Borneo Company’s Medal 1888-1916 was instituted in 1897. It was awarded to military personnel in recognition of service in 15 small expeditions between 1883 and 1915. Silver Medals were awarded to Officers while Bronze Medals were awarded to other ranks.
There were 3 possible authorized clasps awarded with the Medal:
1. “PUNITIVE EXPEDITION”
2. “PUNITIVE EXPEDITIONS”
3. “RUNDUM”
The “PUNITIVE EXPEDITIONS” clasp was awarded for 2 or more actions. All Medals were issued with at least 1 clasp. Only 2 Medals with a second clasp are known to be in existence.
There are multiple versions of the Silver Medal that vary by naming and issue. Only a few Medals were officially named. Spink issued a later specimen of the Medal engraved with “COPY” on the rim and with the “S” of “SON” removed from the maker’s mark to differentiate the later Medals from the earlier versions. There may be additional versions of the Medal that vary by issue.
There were also 2 different ribbons issued with the Medal. The first ribbon version was gold, while the later version was maroon, yellow, and blue.
