History

The British North Borneo Company’s Medal 1899-1900 was instituted in 1900. It was awarded to military personnel for service in the final expedition, led by Captain C.H. Harrington, in the Tambunan Valley against Mat Saleh in January and February of 1900. Initially, Silver Medals were awarded to Officers while Bronze Medals were awarded to other ranks. In 1906, 106 Silver Medals were issued to replace Bronze Medals issued to other ranks.

The Silver Medal is issued with a “TAMBUNAN” clasp.

There are multiple versions of the Silver Medal that differ by naming and issue. Both officially named and unnamed versions of the Medal were issued. Spink issued later versions of the Medal engraved with “COPY” or “SPECIMEN” on the rim and with the “S” of “SON” removed from the maker’s mark to differentiate the later Medals from the earlier versions. There may be additional versions of the Medal that vary by issue.
