The Coronation Medal 1902 was instituted in commemoration of the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on August 9, 1902. The Medal was presented in Silver and Bronze. Silver Medals were presented to members of the royal family, foreign dignitaries, government officials, senior Officers, and service officers involved in the celebrations. The Bronze Medal was presented to Non-Commissioned Officers and other ranks of the army and navy who participated in the parade. Approximately 3493 Silver and 6054 Bronze Medals were awarded.
The Medal features the date "JUNE 26 1902" inscribed on the reverse, even though the Coronation was held on August 9, 1902. This is because the Coronation was postponed as a result of the sudden illness of King Edward VII after the Medals were already struck.
