History

The Jubilee Medal 1887, also known as the Golden Jubilee Medal 1887, was instituted by Royal Warrant in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne on June 21, 1887. The Medal was issued in Gold, Silver, and Bronze to participants at the celebration. Gold Medals were presented to members of the royal family and their personal quests, Silver Medals were presented to members of the royal household, government ministers, senior officers, distinguished foreign visitors, and other significant attendees, and Bronze Medals were presented to Non-Commissioned Officers and men who took part in the parade or in the Spithead review. Approximately 361 Gold, 1234 Silver, and 5859 Bronze Medals were awarded.

A clasp inscribed "1897" was issued to holders of the Golden Jubilee Medal 1887 who attended the Diamond Jubilee 10 years later.
