History

The King's Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom was established by Royal Warrant in 1945 immediately following the end of the Second World War alongside the King’s Medal for Service in the Cause of Freedom. The Medal was awarded to Allied citizens in recognition of courageous contributions made to Allied troops and their efforts during the war, especially those who aided in the escape of British prisoners of war. It was awarded to civilians and military personnel alike, although Medals awarded to military personnel necessitated action above and beyond the call of duty.

The Medal was awarded to men on a breast ribbon and to women on a bow. All were issued unnamed.
