History

The Colonial Meritorious Service Medal was instituted by Queen Victoria on May 31, 1895, to reward colonial forces for service in the British dominions, colonies, and protectorates. The Medal was awarded for service in Canada, Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Commonwealth Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Different ribbon patterns were used to denote the service recognized by the Medal.

There are multiple versions of the Medal which feature a reverse inscription of the colonial force recognized. However, some Medals do not feature a reverse inscription of the service. The Medal also differs by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch at the time of issue. There may be additional versions of the Medal with a different obverse.

The Medal is generally issued named, however unnamed examples are known.
