History

The Indian Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for Europeans 1848 was established by the East India Company by General Order of the Indian Government on May 20, 1848. The Silver Medal was awarded to European Non-Commissioned Officers and other ranks of the East Indian Company Army on discharge after 21 years of meritorious service. The Medal was discontinued in 1873 to be superseded by the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

There are 2 versions of the Medal. The first features an obverse depiction of a shield bearing the arms of the Honourable East India Company and the recipient's name and service details on the reverse. The second version was implemented by mistake when 100 Medals bearing an obverse effigy of Queen Victoria were shipped to India and issued to recipients of the award. The second version does not feature the recipient's name and service details on the reverse.
