The NATO Meritorious Service Medal was established in 1994 and is awarded as NATO's highest honour. The Silver Medal is presented by the secretary general of NATO to military and civil NATO staff in recognition of exceptional contributions made in service to NATO. The Medal is not authorized for wear by United Kingdom personnel, but the award may be retained as a keepsake. Less than 50 Medals are awarded a year.

A silver clasp inscribed "MERITORIOUS" is awarded with the Medal.
