The Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was established by King George VI by Royal Warrant on June 14, 1951 as an award for long and meritorious service. The Silver Medal was initially awarded to full-time regular police officers in any United Kingdom constabulary in recognition of 22 years of service. In 1956 the award was extended to police officers serving in Australia, Papua New Guniea, and Nauru, but the Medal was replaced in Australia in 1976 by the National Medal. In 2010, the qualifying period was reduced to 20 years of service.
There are multiple versions of the Medal which differ by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch. There may additional versions of the Medal which vary by composition.
