The Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service Medal was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II by Royal Warrant on July 24, 2001. The Silver Medal is awarded to all Officers, Petty Officers, and ratings of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service upon the completion of 20 years of service.

Clasps may be awarded to denote an additional 10 years of service.
