History


The South African Prison Service Faithful Service Medal was established in September of 1922 and awarded to prison officers in recognition of 18 years of exemplary service. The Silver Medal was superseded by the South African Prisons Department Faithful Service Medal in 1959.

A "MERIT" clasp was awarded with the Medal to denote awards made in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service or acts of gallantry
