History

The Ulster Defence Regiment Medal was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982 as a long service award. The Silver Medal was awarded to part-time Officers and men of the Ulster Defence Regiment in recognition of 12 years of continuous service since April 1, 1970. The Medal was superseded by the Northern Ireland Home Service Medal in 1992.

Clasps were awarded to denote an additional 6 years of service.

Officers who received the Medal are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "UD."
