The Sierra Leone Independence Medal was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1961 to commemorate Sierra Leone's Independence. The Medal was awarded to Royal Sierra Leone Military Forces, Sierra Leone Naval Volunteer Force and Police Force personnel in recognition of service providing during the Independence on April 27, 1961. United Kingdom Land Forces personnel who supported the Royal Sierra Leone Military Forces were also eligible.
