History

The Stanhope Gold Medal was issued by the Royal Humane Society in 1873 as the highest honour awarded by the Royal Humane Society. The Gold Medal is awarded annually in recognition of the most gallant rescue or act of heroism rewarded with a Royal Humane Society Medal.

Until 1937, the Medal was issued with a suspension bar inscribed "STANHOPE MEDAL" and with the date of the award.
