Hi all,

I have this green enamelled cross and no idea what it is. I've checked through the site but haven't seen anything that resembles it. It's in silver gilt, and the inscription on the obverse reads "INSTITUT. ANNO 1589 RENOVAT. ANNO 1844" and "FIDES" in the medallion. The back is inscribed "ALEXANDER 1s PRING. GONZAGA DUX MANT" with a man's profile. Fleur de lis between the arms, no hallmarks or makers marks.

Any ideas?

I think it says Princ. on the reverse, not Pring.
The Gonzaga family was a princely family in northern Italy that ruled Mantua (see "Dux Mant." in the inscription).
However, in 1589 the head of the house was Vincenzo I. They never had an Alexander, as far as I can see. And their rule over Mantua ended in the 18th century, so the 1844 date remains a mystery to me.
Beautiful piece though!

Alexander Gonzaga was an imposter and scammer, who sold false orders… This was one of them, referred to an Order extinct.
If you plan to sell it, please tell me.
Best regards
