Physical Description and Item Details

This is a rare and extremely well preserved mint Luftwaffe NCO’s civil fire brigade visor cap. The exterior shell is constructed of dark blue wool with correct magenta-coloured piping around the crown, as well as the top and bottom edge of the cap band. The cap band itself is constructed of black wool with a very even feel, and without bumps or holes. The visor is made out of Vulkanfiber, lacquered in black on the upper with a textured khaki “leather-like” lacquering on the lower side. The chin cord is crafted out of black lacquered leather with matching black lacquered metal (magnetic) hardware, with glossy metal (magnetic) buttons on each side of the cap. The Luftwaffe civil employee insignia consist of a national eagle emblem in silvered cupal, with a Luftwaffe civil employee insignia directly below, also constructed of silvered cupal. The inside of the cap is lined with fine light brown rayon, with a sewn-in diamond with maker markings “Carl Halfar Uniform-Mützenfabrik Berlin N.20, Prinzenallee 74 58 Lieferjahr 1940” (size 58 and delivery year 1940) underneath the clear plastic diamond. The sweatband is crafted out of thin brown leather that is perforated towards the front of the cap. The cap measures 273 mm x 250 mm, with a 195 mm diameter for the overall cap size. This cap appears vastly unworn, and is in overall mint condition. The inside liner and sweatband are completely free of sweat stains or other forms of soiling. This cap is without notable flaws of any kind besides light wear to the Luftwaffe civil employee insignia due to natural ageing.

History

The German Wehrmacht was composed of three main branches, the Heer (Army), the Kriegsmarine (Navy), and the Luftwaffe (Air Force). The Heer and Kriegsmarine uniforms were based upon the designs utilized by their predecessor organizations, the Reichsheer and the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy). Conversely, the Luftwaffe uniforms were based upon the uniforms worn in the sports and paramilitary organizations that were the forerunners of the Luftwaffe. The Luftwaffe uniforms were specifically designed to deviate from the designs of the other Wehrmacht service branches. It was also necessary that the uniforms differentiate between military and civilian pilots.

The Luftwaffe Fire Brigades Visor Cap was worn by Luftwaffe firefighters who protected airfields and technical installations.

The cap is dark blue with a black cloth cap band. Above and below the cap band, as well as on the crown, the cap has crimson piping.

Civilians within the Luftwaffe Fire Brigade wore a black leather chin strap for lower ranks, and a silver chin cord for higher ranks.
A national emblem was worn, but not of the Luftwaffe style. Underneath, on the cap band, an insignia composed of a swastika encircled by oak leaves superimposed on four-folded wings was worn.
Officials within the Luftwaffe Fire Brigade wore the same setup, except that they wore the Luftwaffe insignia, a Luftwaffe eagle emblem and a cockade & oak leaves wreath with wings.
