History

The SS divided Germany and the occupied territories into Oberabschnitte (districts) that roughly corresponded to the Germany Army's Wehrkreise (army districts). These districts were further divided into three or four SS-Abschnitte (sub-districts), which could be identified by roman numerals. By the end of the war, there war 45 sub-districts. A complete list can be found in Angolia's "Cloth Insignia of the SS", page 79.

Personnel of the staff of an SS sub-district wore collar tabs embroidered with the sub-district's roman numeral. An exception to this rule was SS sub-district XXXVI, whose personnel wore a collar tab embroidered with an Edelweiss flower, similar to the one worn by the 87th SS-Fuß-Standarte.

The collar tabs for commissioned ranks were piped with aluminium twist cord, while the collar tabs for non-commissioned ranks were piped with alternating black and aluminium twist cord.

As the number of letters in a roman numeral increased, the size of the individual letters on the collar tab decreased in order to fit on a standard sized tab.

The 9th SS sub-district was that of Würzburg.
