History

While the SS was still subordinate to the SA (Sturmabteilung), SS adjutants on the staff of Ernst Röhm, leader of the SA, were required to wear aiguillettes. After the SS became a separate organisation in 1934, Heinrich Himmler approved a black silk SS aiguillette that was flecked with silver.

In December of 1938, a silver-aluminium aiguillette with black flecking was introduced for SS adjutants. The new pattern aiguillette featured two metal hanging tips that were embossed with SS runes.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the army pattern aiguillette was more commonly worn than the 1938 SS aiguillette.
