Physical Description and Item Details


Two piece construction, bronze gilt with white enamels, unmarked, 43x61mm, vertical pinback, intact enamels, light contact, worn yet extremely fine. One of the finest examples of this type we have offered. Approximately only 88 awards one of the rarest awards of the Third Reich.

History


The Danzig Cross was instituted on August 31, 1939 as a two grade decoration by Danzig Gauleiter Albert Forster. It was a Nazi decoration of the Free City of Danzig and was awarded to those who contributed to building up the Nazi Party in the free city.

In all 88 I Class crosses and 253 II Class crosses were awarded, most of them in a ceremony on October 24, 1939.
